A Sense of Place in Time

My paintings have a sense of place and time.  Whether it be a sense of nostalgia or a thrilling display of nature, I find peace and comfort in images of winding country roads, an intimate hollow in the woods, gentle waters, a cool green valley, the patient voice of nature, the changing seasons.

Images must be thoughtfully composed. There must be skillful handling of the medium. Alternating between watercolor, acrylic, oil, even collage, I stay flexible almost instinctually letting the subject dictate the medium.  I carefully consider colors that evoke sublime sensations and transcendental responses.

But then ideally the painting should contain within it a deeper meaning…a story, a memory, a shared experience or suppressed emotion, a dream.  For this is the final element that gives the image a voice. It gives it life.
